Post subject:  Why fast formatting DVD + RW takes so long time ?

Hi,

Somehow fast formatting DVD + RW lasts about 3 minutes.

20 secs -
between CN_DVDPLUSRW_FORMAT_BEGIN and CN_DVDPLUSRW_FORMAT_END

Then 2.5 minutes it is hanged so that it is impossible to launch another program.

All functions have returned success results.

Is it normal?

Fast erasing the same disc using Nero took less than 10 seconds.

Fast erasing CD-RW works fine.

Something wrong  ?

No. Nero uses what's called "background formatting". When the media would be completed formatting when actual burning process would be started. We don't use this and prefer to have two separate processes -- actual formatting and burning when format would be done. From our point of view it provides better results.

Good news. In the upcoming release of StarBurn SDK there would be a choice of not formatting DVD+RW discs at all. So either current way of burning or the one very close to what Nero does would be exported.

APPROVE.
I am looking forward for your new release.

One my customer reported that he had got error on GET TRACK INFO function.
ERROR OCCURED SCSI CDB DELIVERY FAILED
SCSI TRANSPORT ASPI EXECUTE CDB0: COMMAND FAILED

Did he tried to burn on non-formatted disc?

How can I know if DVD RW disc is formatted ? I would not format DVD-RW before burning if it is already formatted.

This sutuation should be handled. Why do not you add it to your samples.

BTW. All of your samples works fine on CD-R/RW ONLY.

Using DVD I've got a lot of "uncommon" situations like burning small files, burning on non-formatted disc and others.

Why do not implement it in your samples?

Thanks in advance.

Detailed log required to handle this situation. What you've posted does not look like bug report. Also what about other customers? You wrote "my customers" and I see only one guy here.

What do you mean by "others"? I think we've agreed on burning small images and DVD+RW formatting code. What are OTHER problems you're having with DVD?

I think at this time the problems are:

1. Burning short files on DVD
2. Burning on non-formatted DVD
3. How can I know if DVD is formatted?
4. How can I know if I can burn on this DVD, what functions should I call and what parameters should I check before start burning process.

I should know this before burning. User should not get some errors in burning progress.

I got bug reports from two customers.
One about small files and another I mentioned in this thread.

Thanks.

1. I think we've negotiated on next build to have 1GB padding done automatically?

2 & 3. This stuff would be done for you.

4. Track-At-Once can be used always.
