Post subject:  Which piece of hardware has failed?

Hello!

I have been having a lot of trouble burning. I have so far replaced the DVDRW, the cable, and tried burning from a fresh OS install using different types of media, all with no joy. Failing after a fresh installation implies hardware, and getting the same errors on both drives says it is probably motherboard - but nothing else is broken and it has passed all the diagnostics I've run on it.

Given the error message below, can anybody tell me which piece of hardware (DMA controller perhaps?) is broken? Or am I doing something fundamentally wrong and/or stupid that can be fixed in software?

Many thanks in advance!

SCSI error code from the log file (after trying to burn an audio disc) is:
-------------------
SCSI sense data dump:
Error Code: 0x70, Is Sense Valid: No, Segment Number: 0x00 (0)
Sense Key: 0x04, Reserved: 0x00, Incorrect Length: No
End Of Media: No, File Mark: No, Information: 0x00 0x00 0x00 0x00
Additional Sense Length: 0x0A (10)
Command Specific Information: 0x00 0x00 0x00 0x00

Additional Sense Code (ASC): 0x08, Additional Sense Code Qualifier (ASCQ): 0x03

Unfortunately you're not providing a log only a quote of it you think is enough. It is not.

From the truncated info I can see it's "logical unit communication crc error (ultra-dma/32)" (I don't know even operation code raised it) so if putting the unit alone on a short ATA cable does not help (I see you've swapped the unit for a new one) I'd throw away mainboard.
